The Help You Need After An Accident

How uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage help victims

While it is the law for people to carry liability insurance so they have a way to pay compensation for any injuries they cause if they drive carelessly, too many motorists on Ohio’s roads choose to ignore this law.

Also, they may have no other means of paying for their victim’s medical bills, lost wages and other expenses, even if an accident was legally their responsibility. Effectively, a victim could be out of luck and forced to cover his or her own losses.

In other cases, a driver may be carrying enough insurance to comply with the law, but the amount of the insurance is just not enough to pay all the bills after a major accident.

Many drivers in the Akron area will have the option to purchase what is called uninsured motorist coverage and underinsured motorist coverage from their own insurance companies.

Speaking generally, uninsured motorist coverage, up to the limit purchased, will pay for compensation when a negligent driver without insurance injures the policyholder and has no means of paying compensation.

Underinsured motorist coverage can be a tricky concept, but the idea is that it may make up for some of the shortfall when a negligent driver does not have enough insurance to pay all compensation to which a victim is entitled.

Pursuing a claim for uninsured or underinsured motorist benefits may require help

Aside from understanding how these benefits work, pursuing one’s own insurance company for uninsured motorist coverage or underinsured motorist coverage benefits may require professional legal assistance.

As with any insurance claim, the company may deny the uninsured or underinsured claim outright or may offer an amount that is shy of what a victim would require to move forward financially.

People should not feel that they have to accept such decisions at face value. Insurance companies can be wrong, sometimes for innocent reasons and sometimes because of too much concern with profit.

Victims may need someone with the experience and knowledge to hold these companies accountable and make them pay the compensation the victims deserve.
